Top tips from our team
- A road trip with a rooftop tent is the best way to explore Oman. In a short amount of time, you can discover both iconic sites and hidden gems, while resting each night in a spot of your choosing. Wild camping is allowed!
- The best time to travel? From late October to early March. The climate is ideal, without extreme heat.
- Make sure to have an offline navigation app, because in the mountains or desert, there often isn't any signal.
- Respect the local culture: dress appropriately in places of worship and respect nature.
The magic of the desert: Wahiba Sands
Wahiba Sands is one of the most iconic desert regions in Oman. It stretches for about 200 kilometers, and the sand dunes can reach up to 100 meters high. The desert is at its best at sunrise or sunset, when the dunes start to shimmer. Try an adventure in a hot air balloon or race down the impressive dunes in a 4×4. Then, spend the night right in the heart of the desert, where the silence is deafening and the starry sky is breathtaking. A campfire, fresh mint tea, and nothing but the desert around you… This is Oman in its purest form.

Impressive mountain landscapes: Jebel Shams and Jebel Bani Jabir
From the desert, it only takes a few kilometers to find yourself in the mountains. Jebel Shams, the highest peak in Oman, is known as the Grand Canyon of the Middle East. After a hike through the gorges, you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view of the surroundings. Another peak, less known but equally impressive, is Jebel Bani Jabir. This mountain range is famous for its cliffs and isolated villages built along steep rocky walls.

Swimming in the wadi: a unique experience
A trip to Oman wouldn't be complete without a refreshing swim in one of the many wadis. Oman has hundreds of them, spread across several regions, but Wadi Shab is one of the most popular. You'll hike between steep gorges, climbing rocks to reach a hidden cave with a waterfall. The crystal-clear turquoise water is perfect for cooling off.

The charming coastal villages
Along the coast of Oman, you'll discover charming fishing villages and vibrant towns like Sur, where traditional dhows (wooden boats) are still handcrafted. Here, you can savor the sea at one of the many waterfront restaurants. Even in smaller coastal spots like Mutra, you'll experience the authentic seaside life: fishermen bringing in their nets early in the morning, kids playing on the beach, and locals greeting you with a smile.

Historic fortifications: a trip back in time
Oman is full of stories, and this is reflected in the impressive forts that dot the landscape. The massive Bahla Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the hidden chambers of Jabreen Castle are worth a visit. Nizwa Fort, with its famous round tower, is also a must-see. If you visit on a Friday, you'll see the area in front of the fort come alive during the traditional goat market. The forts are often located in stunning spots, offering a strategic view of the surrounding mountains, oases, or villages.

Famous sites and hidden gems
The must-see spots in Oman are definitely worth a visit, but what really makes this country special are the unexpected discoveries. With Oman Nomads, you'll take isolated roads where you won't encounter anyone for hours and discover places that tourists usually don't go to.
